Landowner ProfilesHolden , ME
Property Statistics: How much land do you own? 84 acres Where is it located? Holden Do you live on the property? Yes How long have you owned it? 16 years Do you post your land? Why/why not? Part of it, the 15 acres around the home, to keep the hunters ‘at bay.' What is the breakdown of cover types (forest, meadow, agriculture, wetland)? 95% forested, of which about 30-40 acres are wetland (which is growing on account of the beavers). 1 ½ acre pasture. Approximately 4 acres around the house are not forested.
Ownership Objectives: What are your reasons for owning your forest? Your objectives for management? To harvest timber, for privacy, wildlife and aesthetic. We are considering an easement for about 70 of the acres through the Holden Land Trust. Do you have a forest management plan? If so, does it include recreation? Yes, the plan was written by a forester about 6-7 years ago. The plan includes recreation, recommendations for trails and wildlife habitat.
Recreation: What types of recreation do you allow on your land? Hunting, fishing (though the water isn't good for it), snowmobiling, cross country skiing, walking, trapping. My neighbors have been trapping the beaver for a few years. Eastern Maine Snowmobile trail runs about 1 mile through my land and I have had a good relationship with them. I do not allow ATVs. Why do you allow recreation? Because it is part of what defines the Maine forest. If I'm lucky enough to have this land, then I should share it with others. Policing the land would be a hassle and likely make me unhappy. Who recreates on your land? Snowmobilers, some hunters, a few skiers. ATVers need written permission. What problems have you experienced with recreation impacts or recreationists, and how have you worked to solve those problems? ATV trail damage. I talked with the responsible individuals, and gated the road. I've had no problems since I installed the gate. Copyright 2006 University of Maine School of Forest Resources |
