My research activities focus at two distinct spatial scales. At the stand scale, I have been investigating biomass availability after harvesting, stand rehabilitation in high-graded mixed wood stands, and the impacts of partial harvesting patterns on regeneration and residual tree growth. At the landscape scale, I have been developing approaches and using tools to evaluate vulnerability to a variety of disturbance agents and compare the impact of alternative forest management strategies on forest habitat, vulnerability to natural disturbance, harvest, and a variety of other values. Regardless of scale, my research focuses on the complex interactions between historical patterns, stand dynamics, forest management activities, and natural disturbances that determine characteristics of the future forest.
