I grew up in the mountains of western Maine where I spent a lot of recreational time in the forests.  However, it wasn’t until college that I realized I could make a career of studying the ecology of forests to enhance our understanding of them.  The underlying theme of my research has been how disturbances influence the structure, function, and composition of forests.  Although I initially focused on the role of fire in midwestern oak savannas and southwestern ponderosa pine forests, I expanded my research to include additional disturbances common in eastern forests after I joined the UMaine faculty in 1986.
