Education:

  • Ph.D., Oregon State University, Silviculture, 1989.
  • M.S., University of Washington, Forest Ecology, 1980.
  • B.S., Utah State University, Forest Management, 1977.

My Research:

My research career has focused on increasing forest sustainability by improving the success of forest regeneration following harvesting. Thus, my research efforts over the past 30 years have been directed at advancing our understanding about natural and artificial regeneration practices and the related ecological sciences, including early stand dynamics. I brought these interests together several years ago as lead editor of the book “Regenerating the Canadian Forest that was published in 2001.

My current research is focused on improving silvicultural practices and our understanding about the ecological effects of forest management practices in the Acadian forest. My research projects and those of my graduate students include:

  • Improving the composition of hardwood regeneration in beech-dominated stands
  • Understanding the spatial patterns of natural regeneration in the understory of forest stands
  • Understanding the economics and stand dynamics associated with thinning spruce-fir stands
  • Understanding the ecological effects of expanding gap silvicultural systems in the Acadian Forest
  • Understanding the effects of silvicultural intensity and compositional objectives on stand productivity and dynamics
Before coming to the University of Maine in 1998, I was a forest researcher in the Pacific Northwest and Canadian boreal forest. I led a variety of research efforts focused on forest vegetation management and ecology, including leading a comprehensive research program (VMAP) in Ontario, Canada that evaluated methods for reducing dependence on herbicides in forest regeneration.
