Forests Through Time
FTY 111&112-UMaine / ESP 111 & 112 - USM

Course Information

Description

Basic concepts of science will be used to explain how forests have responded to natural and human influences over time.  This foundation will be used to explore how a range of proposed policies will affect the future sustainability of forest systems and their ability to meet society’s needs.

The course is offered in 2 parts.

FTY 111 - Forests Through Time: A web-based course for 1 credit. Lecture recordings, web links, and some readings are available to the general public. Quizzes and restricted material are accessible only to registered students through the use of WebCT. You can register for FTY 111 without needing to register for FTY 112.

FTY 112 - Forests Through Time: Discussions
A 2 credit course with weekly discussions based on information presented in the FTY 111/112 web site and WebCT. Discussions take place on the UMaine campus in Orono and other locations using the Maine Distance Learning Project ATM network for video conferencing. Check the registration section below for likely locations in the coming semester. You must register for FTY 111 when you register for FTY 112.

Together, FTY 111 and FTY 112 satisfy the General Education Population and the Environment Requirement for the UMaine undergraduate programs.

The class is also being offered as ESP 111 and ESP 112 at the University of Sourthern Maine. So, all references to FTY 111 and FTY 112 also apply to ESP 111 and ESP 112.

Recordings require a high speed internet connection for viewing. A high speed internet connection can be a DSL connection, a cable connection, or a T-line connection such as that found on the UMaine campus. Warning: Without a high speed internet connection, you will not be able to view the recordings; please make sure you have access to high speed internet before registering for the course.

If you want to download the recordings to your computer for later playback, you will need to right click the hyperlink as indicated on the web page. This will open a menu list. Select "Save Target as...", and then select where you want to store the file on your computer. Once on your computer, double cliking the recording or "swf" file will likely open the recording in your browser. However, a display control (stop, play, pause buttons) may not be present. If you want a Flash Movie Player to allow you to control the "swf" playback on your computer, try using the player from Flash Movie Player for Window's based computers.

Windows Media Player is required for viewing the instructor's introductory comments. Windows Media Player is available for Windows and Apple based computers. A web browser is also needed such as the latest versions of Microsoft Explorer, Firefox, or Safari. Note: The lecture recording will automatically open after the introductory video is done if your check "Run script commands when present" in the Security tab of the "Options" window.
